After traveling in the northern part of Minhang District, are you longing for more trips? Our journey continues today. In Qibao, an ancient town with long history, you can feel the tranquility in ancient times. Here, you can see a lot of things, including water town landscape full of antique flavor, a fashionable modern art museum, the Qibao Shadow Puppet that has been popular for a hundred years, and a picturesque eco-park.

The First Stop: Qibao Old Street

Collision of Ancient and Modern Culture

Our journey starts. Let’s get on the Metro Line 9 and get off at Qibao Station. After walking 300 meters from Qibao Station, you will see the Qibao Old Street.

The Bund reveals the history of Shanghai in the past one century, but Qibao Ancient Town reveals the city’s vicissitudes in the past one thousand years. The Qibao Ancient Town, centering on the Qibao Old Street, has several venues for people to hold cultural activities, including a bell tower square, the Puxi Square and an ancient theatrical stage. This is a well-preserved ancient water town in Shanghai with typical features of ancient towns in the Yangtze River Delta region.

Walking on the long street paved with stone slabs, the first thing you can see is a stone memorial archway inscribed with Chinese characters: “Qibao Old Street” and a bell tower full of antique flavor. Accompanied by antique buildings on both sides of the street, you will see “red walls, black tiles, white wood windows and doors” and narrow alleys paved with grey stone slabs and feel the charm of an ancient street with the style of Ming and Qing Dynasty.

If you keep walking, you will see the North and South Street of Qibao Old Street. It is renowned as a “living fossil on the history of planning for towns and cities in ancient China”. All old streets at the same period run from the east to the west, but Qibao Old Street is different. It runs from the south to the north. In Shanghai, you can not find a second old street like this. It is also rarely seen in the entire nation.

In Qibao Ancient Town, four streets: Pingxi Street, Xingdong Street, Baonan Street and Chunyou Street, go in opposite directions and form a T shape; the Yaojiabang River and Fuxinggang River extends to all directions in the shape of a cross…“A stone bridge is on the river and there are many houses along the river banks.” The landscape in Qibao Ancient Town exactly looks like this.

When we talk about Qibao Town, we can not forget the Qibao Shadow Puppet. Qibao is the birthplace of Shanghai Shadow Puppet, and Qibao Shadow Puppet was listed as an intangible cultural heritage of Shanghai in 2007.

Minhang District takes active attitude to inherit this traditional craftsmanship and pass it down to people of the next generations. The district held seminars to discuss how to help Qibao Shadow Puppet achieve further development. The district also built a museum for Qibao Shadow Puppet. The address of the museum is 95 Beixi Street. You can spend some time here if you feel tired of shopping.

You can also visit the Vanke Mall near Qibao Old Street. This mall opened to business in 2016. It is a mall with diversified functions, including shopping, dining, entertainment and leisure, and suits the demands of consumption of modern family. Based on the concept of “created for family”, it is a gathering place for several high-quality brands, and is suitable for consumers to spend time here with their family. Kids could play joyfully on the “Rainbow Square”. Moms could go shopping here to their heart’s content. For dads, they can take a rest in the “Lounge for Husbands” if they get tired of shopping. Here, they can read newspapers and magazines or see a movie free of charge.

Let’s really joyful to visit a modern shopping mall full of fashionable elements while going sightseeing in an ancient town!

Collision of Traditional and Contemporary Art

Start from the memorial archway on Qibao Old Street, go straight ahead to the east along Qingnian Road and make a turn to Xinzhen Road, you will arrive at Powerlong Museum within less than 15 minutes.

The “One Park and One District”, composed of Minhang Cultural Park and Qibao Ecological Business District, is one of the 25 gathering zones of modern service sector in Shanghai. Currently, the “One Park and One District” is under construction, and Powerlong Museum, as a part of Qibao Ecological Business District, opened to the public in November 2017. It likes a dazzling pearl of art embedded in Minhang District.

Powerlong Museum is a large art museum showcasing modern and contemporary art. It aims to “advocate the essence of traditional culture and promote the development of contemporary art”, and become an art museum with comprehensive collection system like “a hundred rivers running to the sea”.

What’s the meaning of “a hundred rivers running to the sea”? Walking through winding circular corridors, you will see works of the most representative artists from various regions and of different genres nationwide in the past century, e.g. “So Far Away—Collections of Chinese Landscape Paintings” by Qi Baishi, “Pine Trees and Golden Pavilions by the Lake” by Wu Hufan and “Depart from Chenyang in the Morning and lodge in Cangwu at Night” by Huang Yongyu. You will also see paintings of 15 modern art pioneers in China, e.g. Lin Fengmian, Chang Yu and Guan Liang, and over 300 works of painting, calligraphy, sculpture, architecture, garden, image, Chinese opera and Chinese zither created by more than 80 artists, e.g. Ding Liren, Xia Yang and Shang Yang. Art works with diversified forms, combination of visual art and auditory art and systematic integration of contemporary and modern art reveals the trend of modern art deriving from tradition.

There are two exhibitions in Powerlong Museum currently: “Exhibition of Collections from Shucang Pavilion—Rivers Running to the Sea” and “Inaugural Exhibition of Powerlong Museum—Searching for Roots”. It’s a good idea to visit the museum with your family and kids in the Spring Festival vacation and feel the glamour of Eastern and Western art.

This area, where Powerlong Museum is located, is a “Treasured Land of Culture”. Thanks to the incessant efforts that Minhang District made in promoting the “One Park and One District” program, key projects e.g. Minhang Museum, Shanghai-Style Art Museum, Powerlong City Plaza and Ferrari Culture Center, and high-level international projects e.g. the Century Publishing Park, have settled in this area one after another. In the future, this area will become an important base of cultural industry and new cultural landmark in Shanghai.

The Third Stop: Minhang Cultural Park

Collision of History and Time

Start our journey again from Powerlong Museum. After walking on Caobao Road for 5 minutes, you will see the Southeast gate of Minhang Cultural Park.

After entering the park, you will see a statue of revolutionary hero and a cement fort, and think of the flames of the War of Resistance against Japan. This place is the site where several fierce battles happened. This well-preserved historic site of cement fort is a testimony of history. It witnessed the People’s Liberation Army’s fight against the Japanese invaders and Collaborationist army in the Anti-Japanese War and the fight against the Kuo Min Tang army in the War of Liberation.

Apart from paying tribute to martyrs and remembering history, you can also appreciate the beautiful landscape in the park. Minhang Cultural Park, as a practical project of Minhang District in 2015, consists of three phases. So far, the phase 1, phase 2 and phase 3 projects of the park have been completed and opened to the public. Based on the positioning of “focus on ecology and take culture as the soul”, the park aims to build a landscape brand of magnolia, the city flower of Shanghai. The magnolia garden in the park boasts the largest cultivated area of magnolia and the most varieties of magnolia in Shanghai.

The park creates beautiful ecological environment for tourists. Here, you can appreciate flowers in the magnolia garden, enjoy autumn fruits in the orchard, and discover unique landscape in the ecological wetland, such as water, aqua forest and aromatic plant garden.

There are 3 sevens football fields and 4 basketball courts in the southern area of the park, nearby Wuzhong Road. Why not work out here with your kids and your family in the Spring Festival vacation?
