As a practical project of the district government in 2018, construction for pocket parks and urban greenways will better satisfy citizen’s needs of fitness, leisure and culture. So far, Minhang District has finished renovation projects for 34 pocket parks, and construction for 20 kilometers of urban greenways, based on existing urban greenways, has also been completed. What highlights do these pocket parks and urban greenways have?

One feature for each park, integration of sponge city concept: Compact and exquisite pocket parks

Different from urban park, pocket park itself is a word full of novelty. Comparing with urban park, pocket park looks like a “pocket”. Pocket park means public green space. It refers to small-scale greenbelt on the street, in commercial district or residential area with the functions of garden landscape, recreational service or cultural deposits. A pocket park covers an area from 500 square meters to 5,000 square meters. It scatters in various corners of the city.

Pocket parks in Minhang are renovated from existing greenbelts. In Minhang, several public green spaces with different size and style could be seen in various sub-districts and towns. These greenbelts, since they were constructed long time ago, have dilapidated facilities, and exuberant plants made them even out-of-the-way. After knowing the current situation of these pocket parks, Minhang finally determined to renovate 34 pocket parks with the highest pedestrian flow and utilization rate.

One feature for each park: While renovating these pocket parks, Minhang District carefully considered the specific culture of various sub-districts and towns and highlighted local features by integrating specific cultural elements into these parks. For example, Tongxin Garden, located on the north side of Yejiaqiao Road in Pujiang Town, covers an area of nearly 5,000 square meters. This park features “Unity of the Party and the Government and Realizing the China Dream”. In the park, bulletin boards of law knowledge and plants are connected to each other by pergolas and footpaths, and formed a circular, closed-loop structure for citizens to enjoy the landscape or take a rest.

Enriched plant community: Inappropriate plants were removed based on the theme of park, and trees and shrubs, e.g. camellia, Lagerstroemia indica cv, golden rain tree, Prunus cerasifera, gingko, red maple, magnolia and crape myrtle, were planted to form well-arranged, natural and diversified distribution of plants and enhance the ornamental value of plants.

Let’s take a look at the pocket park at the intersection of Jianghang Road and Puhang Road. The park is located on the south side of Puhang Road and the west side of South Jianghang Road. It features autumn landscape and ensures visitors to see various flowers and leaves in autumn. Trees and shrubs, e.g. red maple, Chinese tallow tree and Japanese maple, were planted in the park. The color of leaves will change in autumn every year. This park provides a new option to residents for taking a stroll and enjoying autumn landscape.

Integration of the sponge city concept: Construction for pocket park is another practice of the district to construct “sponge city”. By covering the bottom of plants with eco-friendly materials, it not only offers good atmospheric conditions for plants, but also protects the environment, and plays a positive role in constructing low-carbon, eco-friendly sponge city and ecological civilization.

In Tongxin Garden, the ground is covered by baked bricks. These bricks have the function of skid resistance. On rainy or snowy days, they will quickly absorb the rain water on the ground.

In the past, when growing plants in the park, the cultivator didn’t leave sufficient space for plants, and the space between different plants was narrow. Once the park was flourishing with plants, some plants would be unable to survive. This time, when growing plants in the greenbelt at the intersection of Jianghang Road and Puhang Road, the greenery authority has carefully considered this issue, and covered the bottom of plants with volcanic rocks and barks. This approach not only avoids water and soil loss, preserves moisture and fertilizer, but also adds aesthetic value to the plants.

“Pocket park is the ‘miniature’ of the ecological environment in Minhang. If these pocket parks are successful, we’ll upgrade them into urban parks like Minhang Sports Park and Minhang Cultural Park,” according to Cai Jinfa, deputy head of the district greenery and urban appearance administration bureau.

Take a stroll on the footpath, enjoy the landscape in sea of flowers and get knowledge of law by scanning QR code: The urban greenways look so interesting

Urban greenways connected public green spaces together. In early 2018, Minhang District confirmed a task to construct another 20 kilometers of urban greenways, and now the district has completed this task. These new urban greenways are located in 7 towns and sub-districts, e.g. Pujiang Town, Wujing Town, Meilong Town, Qibao Town, Jiangchuan Road Sub-district, Gumei Sub-district and Pujin Sub-district.

Map: Distribution of the new 20 kilometers of urban greenways completed in 2018

Recently, Min Min paid a visit to two of these urban greenways and found them very interesting.

The Pufang Road Greenway is located in Pujiang Town. This 1.5-kilometer greenway starts from Sanlu Road in the west and ends at Zhaolou Road in the east. There is a steel-wired plank road on the greenway. According to a person-in-charge of the greenway, the Orychophragmus violaceus flowers on the greenway are shooting out buds now, and tourists will find bluish violet shrubs flowering from the bottom of the greenway in April and June. Imagine how comfortable it is to walk in a colorful sea of flowers. Tourists would also find benches and waste containers on the greenway. Don’t you find these designs very practical and tourist-friendly?

The Jianchuan Road Greenway (section in Wujing Town) starts from the Danshui River in the west and ends at Baoxiu Road in the east. This 6-kilometer-long greenway is a relatively longer one among all greenways being completed this time. This greenway features the culture of rule by law. Visitors will find stones on both sides of the footpath, which aim to popularize knowledge of law.

Look, a citizen is scanning the QR code on the stone with his smart phone for studying legal knowledge.

Trees, shrubs and landscape sculptures make this greenway more beautiful. When it gets warmer in spring, all flowers bloom together, the landscape here will be so fascinating.

This octagon-shaped sculpture with irregular geometric design adds natural, rustic charm to the greenway.

According to the “Minhang District’s Thirteenth Five-Year Plan of Greenery Construction”, urban greenway construction will be the focus of ecological environment construction in Minhang District. Minhang District plans to construct about 100 kilometers of urban greenways during this “Thirteenth Five-Year Plan” and every year, 20 kilometers of urban greenways will be completed. So far, Minhang District has completed 100 kilometers of urban greenways. In the future, Minhang District will highlight eco, comfortable and people-oriented features and construct more urban greenways for citizens.

An ecological greenery network that consists of several “points” (pocket parks) and “lines” (urban greenways) has been built in Minhang. As more pocket parks and urban greenways being completed in Minhang, there’ll be more places for Minhang people to go jogging and take a stroll, and means of fitness for people will be more diversified. We look forward to seeing a Minhang surrounded by more green spaces, full of ecological charms.
